Father’s Day 2023 Musings

This past weekend was Father’s Day and I spent the day at my parent’s house just hanging out with my dad. I do this pretty regularly, I make the drive south to their farm and spend the day down there. Father’s Day didn’t make it much different but I did reflect on a few things that kind of “clicked” for me.

My dad is my go to cigar partner, he’s not someone entrenched in the culture or up on the current blends or even cigar news he’s just someone who enjoys smoking a good cigar. Beyond the cigar my dad loves the

social aspect, his favorite part is simply conversation, share stories, telling jokes, whatever. Sunday morning I loaded up a nice selection of cigars and made the 20-30min drive south into the country. I wasn’t sure why I bothered to take a selection because I knew that I had his favorite cigar with me and that’s what he would choose.

Sure enough I started pulling out cigars and his eyes lit up at the sight of the Alec Bradley Magic Toast, this has been his favorite cigar for about the last year or so. I had other cigars with me that I wanted to try but our tradition is that we always smoke the same cigar so that we can talk about it.Now that’s not to say anything negative about the Alec Bradley Magic Toast, as I do quite enjoy it. We spent the next couple of hours smoking our cigars and talking/laughing/enjoying the company. It was in that moment that it hit me, it didn’t matter what cigar I was smoking as I wasn’t paying much attention to it on this day it was all about time with my dad. The cigar was nice and we both enjoyed it but ultimately the joy didn’t come from the cigar it came from spending time with someone that I loved.

Now I’ll be honest I’m not sure what I’m hoping to get across here, but I think it’s something like you don’t need a great cigar to have a great time. Sure a good cigar always helps but it’s not always all about what cigar you are smoking we could have been smoking dog rockets and still had a great afternoon. This may have just simply been a post to say Happy Father’s Day! Enjoy time with the people you love, if you can work a cigar into that even better but don’t let your good times hinge on what cigar you are smoking.
